Create or manage a Custom Voter audience

Generate a new Custom Voter audience or manage an existing one, and assign an audience to new or existing campaigns.

Custom Voter audience overview

Generate Custom Voter audiences to reach the right users with your political campaigns. These audiences are built using voter segments, and are customized based on locations, districts, demographics, party registration, and more. You can also utilize AI-powered audience generation tools, and review insights into the audience’s reach before finalizing any requirements.

Create a Custom Voter audience

You can use the Audiences app to create one Custom Voter audience at a time, and in the following ways:

You can also use a combination of these options; for example, you might prompt AI to create an initial set of segment selections for your audience, then manually choose additional ones.

Follow these steps to access the + Create Audience workflow:

  1. Open the Audiences app.

  2. Select Custom Voter Audience.

  3. Click + Create New. This will open the Create Custom Voter Audience pop-up window.

Create with voter segments

Follow these steps to create a Custom Voter audience from individual voter segment selections:

  1. Enter a name for the audience.

  2. Search or browse and select the state(s) where your target audience is located.

    1. If needed, click the trashcan icon in the Actions column of a state to deselect it.

  3. Select Continue.

  4. Select the Voter Segments tab.

  5. Click + Segments to search or browse and select voter segments.

    1. Choose whether the segments in the Segment Group are assigned an “OR” or “AND” relationship.

  6. If desired, select + Group within the Segment Group to add more granular conditions with a nested logic applied.

    1. Choose whether the segments in the Segment Sub-group are assigned an “OR” or “AND” relationship.

  7. If desired, select + Group outside of the first Segment Sub-group to create a new group.

    1. Repeat steps 5 and 6 to select the segments you’d like to add to the second Segment Group and any applicable sub-groups.

  8. If the audience includes more than one Segment Group, choose the relationship between them.

  9. For each Segment Group and any sub-groups, choose whether a user should be included or excluded based on whether they meet the selected criteria.

    1. Leave a toggle switch as is (green and to the right) to include users that meet the selected criteria.

    2. Select a toggle switch once (red and to the left) to exclude users that meet the selected criteria.

  10. Select Apply.

  11. In the Map tab, compare the audience’s Potential Reach, Audience Size, and distribution of party affiliations.

  12. In the Insights tab, review graphic insights into the audience’s voter pool.

  13. Select Create Audience to generate the Custom Voter audience.

Your Custom Voter audience will immediately begin processing. You can monitor its current status by following the steps outlined in Review a Custom Voter audience.

Create with AI assist

Follow these steps to use AI to select the appropriate voter audience segments based on your criteria:

  1. Enter a name for the audience.

    1. Choose a unique one to differentiate this audience from others that you may create.

  2. Search or browse and select the state(s) where your target audience is located.

  3. Click Continue.

  4. Select the AI Assist tab.

  5. Specify your audience requirements.

    1. If desired, select a chat preset.

    2. Describe your audience’s characteristics and select the arrow icon.

    3. Repeat this process to add additional requirements, as needed.

    4. Select Apply. This will automatically select the voter segments that match your audience requirements.

  6. Select the Voter Segments tab.

  7. Follow steps 5 through 13 of the Create with voter segments workflow to review the auto-selected segments and their potential reach; make any adjustments, if desired; and create the Custom Voter audience.

Your Custom Voter audience will immediately begin processing. You can monitor its current status by following the steps outlined in Review a Custom Voter audience.

Manage a Custom Voter audience

Use the Custom Voter Audience page of the Audiences app to review, search, sort, or filter your existing audiences. You can also use this page to duplicate or delete them, and assign them to campaigns.

Review a Custom Voter audience

Follow these steps to locate and review an existing Custom Voter audience.

  1. Locate the audience you’d like to review.

    1. Search by ID or Audience Name.

    2. Filter by Status.

    3. Open the column selector to add or remove a table column.

  2. Select the desired audience ID in the ID column. This will open the audience.

  3. Review the settings you specified when you created the audience and related insights.

    1. Review the audience’s Segment Groups and segments, and the relationships between them, in the Voter Segments panel.

    2. Review the audience’s Potential Reach, Audience Size, and distribution of party affiliations in the Map tab.

    3. Review graphic insights into the audience’s voter pool in the Insights tab.

  4. Close the audience pop-up window to return to the Custom Voter Audience page.

Edit a Custom Voter audience

Editing is not currently supported for Custom Voter audiences. We recommend duplicating an existing audience to start from an existing audience’s settings.

Duplicate a Custom Voter audience

You can duplicate one Ready, Processing, or Failed audience at a time, and in the following ways:

Duplicate from the table

Follow these steps to duplicate an existing Custom Voter audience from the Custom Voter Audience table.

  1. Select the page icon from the desired audience’s Actions column.

  2. The new audience will include the same state and segment selections as the original audience.

    1. Click Edit States to modify the audience’s state selection.

    2. Select the trashcan icon next to a Segment Group to remove it from the audience.

    3. Select the trashcan icon next to a segment to remove it from a Segment Group.

    4. Follow the steps outlined in Create with voter segments or Create with AI assist to create new Segment Groups, add segments to them, and choose the relationships between them.

  3. Click Apply to update the data included in the audience’s Map and Insights tabs.

  4. Select Create to generate the Custom Voter audience.

The duplicated audience will appear in the Custom Voter Audience table of the Audiences app. The original audience will remain unchanged.

Duplicate from the audience preview

Follow these steps to duplicate an existing Custom Voter audience while reviewing that existing audience:

  1. Select the desired audience’s ID in the ID column. This will open the audience.

  2. Select the vertical ellipses.

  3. Click Duplicate. This will open the Duplicate Custom Voter Audience pop-up window.

  4. Enter a name for the audience.

  5. Select Duplicate.

  6. Follow steps 2 through 4 of the Duplicate from the table workflow.

The duplicated audience will appear in the Custom Voter Audience table of the Audiences app. The original audience will remain unchanged.

Delete a Custom Voter audience

Audience deletion notice: Note that deleted audiences are unrecoverable, and this action is permanent. As a safeguard, consider duplicating and updating the audience to reflect any desired changes.

You can delete Custom Voter audiences individually or in bulk. They must feature a Ready, Processing, or Failed status; and their Allowlist/Blocklist count must be 0.

Delete from the table

Follow these steps to delete an existing Custom Voter audience from the Custom Voter Audience table.

  1. To delete audiences individually, use the Actions column to select the trash can icon next to the individual audience that you’d like to delete

  2. To delete audiences in bulk:

    1. Select the checkbox(es) next to the desired audience(s).

    2. Click Delete.

The deleted audience(s) will no longer appear in the Audiences app.

Delete from the audience

Follow these steps to delete an existing Custom Voter audience while reviewing that existing audience:

  1. Select the desired audience’s ID in the ID column. This will open the audience.

  2. Select the vertical ellipses.

  3. Click Delete.

The deleted audience will no longer appear in the Audiences app.

Assign a Custom Voter audience to a campaign

Custom Voter audiences can be assigned to new and existing campaigns, and from the Audiences and Campaigns apps. Refer to Assign an audience to a campaign for step-by-step instructions.

Review data costs

The Data Cost metric represents a campaign’s total spend or targeting and/or blocking data segments. This includes the total amount spent on audience targeting.

You can review a campaigns’ data costs in the following ways:

Review a campaign’s data costs from the Dashboard app

Follow the steps outlined in Customize a dashboard table - Add or remove a column to choose which metrics are displayed on your dashboard. Select the Data Cost metric from the Spending category to add it.

Review a campaign’s data costs from the Campaigns app

In the Campaigns app, open the column selector to choose which metrics are displayed in the table. Select the Data Cost metric from the Spending category to add it.

Review a campaign’s data costs from the Reports app

Follow the steps outlined in Generate a report to create a custom report. Select the Data Cost metric from the Spending category to add it to the report.
