Bid Model overview

A Bid Model is an optimization tool that you can control to adjust bids, allocate budgets, and shift priorities to optimize campaign performance.

Certain factors, such as eligibility requirements, differ based on the individual Bid Model component that you define for a campaign. Refer to these resources before beginning the process of applying a Bid Model setting to a Location dimension:

In this article, you’ll learn how to apply a Bid Model setting (Spend Ratio, Priority, Bid Modifier) to a Location dimension. You can also add Bid Model settings to Creative, Inventory, and Device dimensions. Refer to these resources for more details:

Apply Bid Model settings

Dimension category notice: Bid Modeling can be applied to one Location dimension at a time. This means that you can apply Bid Model settings to either States, Cities, or ZIP Codes for Location dimensions—not a combination of them.

Since cities are subsets of states—and ZIP codes are subsets of cities—ad serving might only be possible for certain dimensions that your campaign is targeting when you apply Spend Ratios to Location dimensions. Refer to Key terms and concepts: Spend Ratios applied to Location dimensions for more information and examples.

You can add Bid Model settings to one campaign at a time, and in the following ways:

Add a Spend Ratio, Priority, and/or Bid Modifier from the Bid Model app

  1. Select the Bid Model app from the homepage.

  2. Choose whether the campaign is Running, Paused, Pending, Paused, Rejected, or a Draft from the status dropdown menu.

  3. Search and select the campaign for which you want to apply Bid Model settings.

    1. A campaign or IO is searchable from the Select Campaign field when two criteria are met: it is eligible for Bid Modeling, and its status matches the one you chose in step 2.

  4. Expand the Location menu.

  5. Choose State, City, or ZIP Codes depending on the dimensions for which you want to apply Bid Model settings.

  6. In the All States, All Cities, or All ZIP Codes tab, click the checkbox(es) next to the desired dimension value(s).

  7. Select + Add to Modeling.

  8. Select the Modeled States, Modeled Cities, or Modeled ZIP Codes tab, depending on the dimension values you selected.

  9. To apply a Spend Ratio to these locations:

    1. Locate the Spend Ratio Method column and choose Flexible or Strict.

      1. Refer to Spend Ratio overview - Key terms and concepts for more information on these options.

      2. Note that Priorities are required for any locations featuring a Flexible Spend Ratio.

    2. Locate the Spend Ratio column and enter a percentage from 0% to 100% for each location.

      1. The percentages must equal 100% if the Spend Ratio is Strict, and can equal or exceed 100% if it’s Flexible.

    3. Select Update Changes to apply the settings.

  10. To apply a Priority to these locations:

    1. Locate the Priority column.

    2. Add a priority ranging from 1 to 10 for each location, with smaller numbers indicating a higher priority, and larger numbers indicating a lower priority.

    3. Refer to steps 9a-9b to apply Spend Ratios to these locations. A Flexible Spend Ratio is required for any dimension values that are assigned a Priority.

    4. Select Update Changes to apply the settings.

  11. To apply a Bid Modifier to these locations:

    1. Locate the Bid Modifier column.

    2. Enter a Base Bid Price for the campaign.

    3. Add a multiplier between 0.1X and 100X for each desired location.

      1. 1X indicates that you want the location to observe the campaign’s Base Bid Price. Numbers below 1X indicate that you want to pay less than the campaign’s Base Bid Price, and numbers above 1X indicate that you want to pay more than the campaign’s Base Bid Price for that dimension value.

    4. Select Update Changes to apply the settings.

The Spend Ratios, Priorities, and/or Bid Modifiers will typically apply to the campaign within the next hour.

Bulk operations: Steps 9, 10, and 11 share how to apply Bid Model settings one by one. To apply the same Bid Model setting to multiple dimension values, use bulk operations instead. Select the checkbox next to those dimension values; open the Actions menu; and select Spend Ratio, Priority, or Bid Modifier to enter your preferred settings.

Add a Spend Ratio, Priority, and/or Bid Modifier from the Campaigns app

  1. Choose the Campaigns app from the homepage.

  2. Search or filter and select the insertion order (IO), then select the campaign. This will open the campaign’s details.

  3. Locate the Campaign Locations section.

  4. Select Advanced Modeling. This will redirect you to the Bid Model app.

    1. Advanced Modeling is enabled when the campaign is eligible for Bid Modeling and one or more locations are added to the List of Targeted Locations. Refer to Bid Model overview for more details on campaign eligibility requirements.

Add a Spend Ratio, Priority, and/or Bid Modifier from the Dashboard app

You can choose to optimize a campaign via Bid Model settings from the Dashboard app. This will redirect you to the Bid Model app and preload key details such as the campaign’s name and status.

  1. Open the Dashboard app.

  2. Use the dashboard’s filters and search function to define which campaigns populate in the table.

  3. Select the checkbox next to the campaign for which you’d like to apply Bid Model settings.

  4. Select Optimize Campaign from the More dropdown menu. This will redirect you to the Bid Model app.

    1. Optimize Campaign is enabled when the campaign is eligible for Bid Modeling, and when only one campaign is selected. Refer to Bid Model overview for more details on campaign eligibility requirements.

Block or unblock serving for a location

Follow these steps to block or enable ad serving for individual dimensions:

  1. Select the checkbox next to the Location dimension value(s) that you’d like to manage.

  2. Select Block or to stop ad serving or Unblock to enable ad serving.

Manage Dimension Bundles

More on Bundles: A Bundle is a feature that you’ll use to manage the Bid Model settings of two or more dimension values from the same dimension. Note that all dimension values in a Bundle will take on the Bid Model settings that you apply at the Bundle level.

Refer to Key terms and concepts: Dimension Bundles for more information.

Save dimension values to a Bundle

Follow these steps to save one or more dimension values to a new or existing Bundle:

  1. Select the All States, All Cities, or All ZIP Codes tab; or the Modeled States, Modeled Cities, or Modeled ZIP Codes tab.

  2. Click the checkbox(es) next to the desired dimension value(s).

  3. Select Save To Bundle. This will open the Bundle States, Bundle Cities, or Bundle ZIP Codes pop-up window, depending on the type of dimension value(s) you chose.

  4. To add the dimension values to a new bundle:

    1. Click New Bundle.

    2. Enter a unique name for the Bundle to differentiate it from others that you may create.

  5. To add the dimension values to an existing Bundle:

    1. Click Existing Bundle.

    2. Open the Bundle Name menu and select the desired Bundle.

  6. Select Save.

The Bundle “shell” will feature a dedicated row in the Bid Model table, with each bundled dimension value nested below it.

Remove dimension values from a Bundle

Follow these steps to remove one or more dimension values from an existing Bundle:

  1. Select the All States, All Cities, or All ZIP Codes tab; or the Modeled States, Modeled Cities, or Modeled ZIP Codes tab.

  2. Locate and expand the desired Bundle.

  3. Select the checkbox(es) next to the dimension value(s) you’d like to remove.

  4. Select Remove From Bundle. This will separate the dimension value out from the Bundle and list it as its own standalone item in the Bid Model table.

Delete a Bundle

A Bundle is automatically deleted when all dimension values associated with it are removed from the Bundle. Refer to the steps outlined in Remove From Bundle for more details.

Add a Spend Ratio, Priority, and/or Bid Modifier to a Bundle

You can follow the steps outlined in Add a Spend Ratio, Priority, and/or Bid Modifier from the Bid Model app to configure these settings for a Bundle. Instead of in individual dimension values’ rows, however, you’ll apply each of your settings in the Bundle’s top-most row. All dimension values in a Bundle will take on the Bid Model settings that you apply at the Bundle level.

Remove all Bid Model settings from a Bundle

Modeling removal notice: Remove From Bundle and Remove Modeling are two different actions.

When you Remove From Bundle, the dimension value is separated from the Bundle and is modeled as an independent dimension. However, when you Remove Modeling, the dimension value moves to the Others category. If you have applied Bid Model settings to the Others category, then the dimension value(s) will inherit those settings.

Follow these steps to remove Bid Model settings from a Bundle or a Bundled dimension:

  1. Select the Modeled States, Modeled Cities, or Modeled ZIP Codes tab.

  2. Locate and expand the desired Bundle.

  3. Select the checkbox next to the Bundle’s name to select every dimension value within it, or click the checkbox(es) next to individual Bundled dimension values.

  4. Select Remove Modeling.

Manage an existing Bid Model

There’s no limit to the number of times you can add, change, or remove a running campaign’s Bid Model components.

Refer to Activity Log overview for more details on the types of activities recorded in an Activity Log, and Manage an Activity Log for instructions on how to monitor or filter one.

Edit Bid Model settings

You can edit a campaign’s existing Bid Model settings from the following locations:

Spend Ratio notice: When you change an existing Spend Ratio, you must define a Spend Ratio exceeding the amount the campaign has already spent on that dimension value. For example, if a campaign has spent 20% of its budget on ZIP Code A, you can change its Spend Ratio to a value of 21% or higher.

For Bundled dimension values, the Bundle’s Spend Ratio must equal or exceed the total amount the campaign has already spent on its dimension values.

Refer to in-platform descriptions for further assistance.

Edit Bid Model settings from the Bid Model app

  1. Follow steps 1-7 of the Review Bid Model settings from the Bid Model app workflow.

  2. Edit the campaign’s Spend Ratio, Priority, and/or Bid Modifier settings, as desired.

    1. To update one location’s Bid Model components at a time, update the Priority, Spend Ratio, and Bid Modifier fields directly.

    2. To update more than one location’s Bid Model components with the same value, select the checkboxes next to those locations. Open the Actions menu and select Set Priority, Set Spend Ratio or Set Bid Modifier, depending on the desired updates.

  3. Edit the applicable field(s) and select Update Changes.

You can follow these same steps to edit the Bid Model settings of Bundled dimension values–but you’ll apply your desired changes to the Bundle’s top-most row rather than individual dimension values’ rows.

Your Bundle-level or dimension-value-level changes will typically apply to the campaign within the next hour.
